From the late 19th century postcards became popular, and as more people were holidaying at the seaside , postcards became a cheap way to remember them and to write home to friends and family.

Mable Lucie Attwell was an illustrator, born in London in 1879, and she was known for her cute drawings of children which featured on many postcards, posters, advertisements, books, figurines and china ware. She had a long and successful career.

In 1908 she married painter and illustrator Harold Cecil Earnshaw, they had 3 children, two boys and a girl. She died in 1964.
